Illuminating Design

Kristen Fielding, owner and creator of Illuminating Designs, is one to know. She makes some of the most beautiful and unique custom lamp shades that everyone will want in their home. I had the chance to interview Kristen recently and this is what she had to say…

How long have you been making lamp shades?

I’ve been making lamp shades for about three years now but I’ve only been selling them for about a year.

What made you start creating lamp shades?

I started out making shades for my own lamps when I couldn’t find what I wanted and just woke up one day and decided to post them on Etsy.com and see what happens! I started selling a lot and getting great feedback so then I got fun and creative with it and taught myself how to make pendant fixtures, hemp lanterns and all different kinds of lighting!

What are some of your inspirations for your work?

Most of my ideas/inspiration comes from what I want in my own space. When I first started, I was in an apartment so most of what I created was lighting that would be practical in that type of space. I recently bought a house and I’m doing all the lighting in 3 bedrooms, a family room, dining room, and kitchen so I’m working on a whole new line of really fun, one-of-a-kind lighting with materials like wood, hemp, fabric, and glass beads that you’ll be able to find in my shop very soon!

Are you available for custom work?

I specialize in custom work so I can make a shade or pendant fixture with any fabric or material of your choice, in any size!

Anything you want to add?

I really enjoy to create things that people love and I feel so honored to be making things that people are proud to display in their homes! I hope you’ll come and check out my shop!
